Yes, Toronto Has Beaches, and You Need to Go

Classes may have started, and while we may already find ourselves overwhelmed by impending deadlines and assignments, the weather is enough to make us forget about silly readings and research proposals (at least for the weekend)! The Toronto Beaches Festival at Woodbine Beach last Saturday was the perfect escape for my friends and me to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather.

Woodbine Beach

The festival had around 40 different vendors selling delicious food, perfect for a beach day! From jerk chicken and fried plantains, popcorn and fish bites (sounds weird, but was actually amazing), and classic fish and chips, there was a range of different cuisines to satisfy any beach-side craving. This event was the perfect place for some light day-drinking, with a Strongbow Cider booth, and many tropical drinks like piña coladas and margaritas!

These were the amazing fish tacos at one of the vendor booths!

The festival had a ticket system in place for payment. Each ticket was worth $2, and they were sold in packs of 10. Tickets were purchased right when you entered the beach, so there was no chance of losing credit cards or cash in the sand! The only issue I had was when I didn’t use up all of my tickets, but I was able to sell them back to someone waiting in line, so it all worked out!

We had to document the event with a beach day selfie!

Because I’m from California, the beach is a place I am very familiar with! My lovely friends, on the other hand, were not as beach ready. Not a single one of my friends wore flip-flops, so needless to say they were slightly uncomfortable in their sandy sneakers! When we made our way down to the water to hang out, we discovered I was the only one who had brought a towel. My friend Emily was so hot that she ended up buying one of the shirts they were selling just so she could change out of her hot jean jacket!

The Toronto Beaches Festival was a great way to spend the day just relaxing and soaking up the sunshine. Make sure you check it out next year, it’s an awesome way to spend the day! I think it’s really important to take the time to get away from the often stressful environment of the big city, and enjoy yourself in a more low-key setting. This may be something like taking a day trip outside of the city, or something as little as going for a walk in a local park! Anything that helps you to de-stress and recharge is something worth taking the time for. Make sure to spend some time outside this week enjoying the beautiful weather while it lasts, and to spend quality time with your people.
