Let’s be honest, there is not enough time in the day for those of us with busy semester schedules to sit down with a good book! So what are us literary types to do? Audiobooks are the perfect solution for those of us who don’t have the time to sit down and read a book. You can listen to them on your morning commute, while you’re grocery shopping, or, if you’re the multitasking type, while you’re even doing homework! Continue reading for the top 5 audiobooks for students this semester.
1. George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire
33 Hours, 50 Minutes
Read By: Roy Dotrice
Want to get in on the action of GoT, but don’t want to pay for HBO? (Well, you should invest in HBO because this is the greatest show of the century, just saying…) Listen to the books read by the phenomenal voice actor, Roy Dotrice. This book will probably carry you through the entire semester. It’s a whopping 34 hours for goodness sake. But it is SO worth it. Like dragons? Game of Thrones. Like gruesome murder? Game of Thrones. Like the destruction of an entire family AND the destruction of your heart at the same time? Game of Thrones. There’s a little bit of everything for everyone!
2. Stephen King’s IT
44 Hours, 57 Minutes
Read By: Steven Weber
Whether you haven’t seen the new film adaptation or you’re anxiously awaiting part two, Stephen King’s IT is a story we are all aware of right now. So, as Stephen King himself has mentioned, maybe you should listen to the book itself! While this is the lengthiest selection on our list, and will also probably take you through the entirety of the semester, this terrifying psychological thriller is just the thing for those of us horror buffs. Granted, while you probably won’t be able to sleep at night after a couple of chapters of this story, this book is a must read (Or listen to!).
3. Lauren Weisberger’s The Devil Wears Prada
14 Hours, 4 Minutes
Read By: Bernadette Dunne
Now, for those of us girls who love a good wine night with the besties, watching The Devil Wears Prada is the go to movie. But have you ever actually read the book? If the answer is no, then why not take the time to listen to it!? A shorter of the audiobooks on our list, The Devil Wears Prada is just as captivating as a read as it is a movie. If you’re into a classic feel good rom-com, this is definitely the pick for you!
4. Alice Hoffman’s Skylight Confessions
7 Hours
Read By: Mare Winningham
Any American Horror Story fans out there? If so, you might recognize this narrator! If not, trust me, her voice and this story are nothing less of captivating. Alice Hoffman’s Skylight Confessions is not a feel-good book. It is very, very depressing. But, its characters are nothing short of relatable, and the story itself is beautifully described throughout the piece. Granted, I am very partial because this is my absolute favorite book, the ending can be a little frustrating because you’re going to want more. This is the shortest of our selection, so you’ll blow through it easy-peasy lemon squeasy! I promise, it’s totally worth it.
5. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s What Happened
16 Hours, 15 Minutes
Read By: Hillary Rodham Clinton
Alright, I couldn’t NOT include this book that was literally released the day this article was written. Here is Hillary Clinton, narrating the story of how she somehow managed to lose the presidential election to Donald J. Trump. This book describes everything HRC was thinking, feeling, and experiencing during this time. It is raw, it is captivating, it’s a little depressing, but it is SO important. Whether you’re a hardcore Republican, or an overly committed Democrat, this story is absolutely relevant, and should be read by anyone interested in politics. Trust me, do it for yourself.
