How to Make Your Dorm Room Feel Like Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryn Mawr chapter.

At the beginning of the school year, there are so many opportunities to start fresh and make something your own. One of the best ways to do that is by creating an amazing dorm room that you’re proud to call home. Here are just a few great ideas for decorating your dorm!

String Lights

Lights are a gorgeous way to add a bit of a cozy vibe to your room. Wrap them up on whichever wall you want; they’ll look great anywhere. You can pick tons of colors and watts to match your preference. The twinkly white and colored Christmas ones are my personal favorites. These lights can be found at Target, Walmart, Bed Bath and Beyond, Amazon and many other retailers.

Posters

Posters are the easiest way to make your dorm room feel like home. Whether it’s a poster for Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, superheroes, fashion or any other theme that strikes your interest, posters are the quintessential college dorm necessity. There are thousands of them at Walmart, Target, Amazon, allposters.com and tons more in other stores.

Photos

Another way to make your dorm room feel like home is bringing photos of your family and friends. Choose some of your favorite memories and get frames for them from Bed Bath and Beyond, CVS or Target. Making sure I have photos of my family is one of the best ways I stave off homesickness.

Throw Pillows and Blankets

When you go to a college in a colder area, like Bryn Mawr, throw pillows and blankets are a must. They’re also a terrific way to add even more cozy and homely vibes to your dorm room. Getting fuzzy blankets and pillows are great; I also try to have some knitted ones too. These items can be purchased at Target (my personal favorite) and many other retailers.

Storage Crates

Storage crates are one of the best ways to optimize storage in a miniscule dorm room, even though Bryn Mawr luckily has some pretty substantially large rooms! These crates can be found at most stores and are wonderful for storing sweaters, beauty products, school supplies or any other miscellaneous items you might have in your dorm room.

These are just a few great items to add to your dorm room in order to make it your own! With these in your dorm, it’ll feel just like home.

She's passionate about books, writing, girls' education, and Harry Styles. If she's not in class, you can find her studying in the library, grabbing brunch with her friends, or taking a yoga class. If you want to read Samantha's past work, you can find it on the Her Campus Bryn Mawr section.
