This summer, I worked as a full-time Public Relations Intern in LA and wanted to take you along with me for the day. Let’s start our day together!
7:30 a.m. Wake Up
The PR industry is known for its longer hours—my typical day in the office is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
8:00 a.m. Get Dressed
This is always my favorite part of the morning. I typically wear office-friendly culottes and a nice blouse. In my opinion, business casual is always the move when it comes to being an intern.
8:30 a.m. Leave for Work
Traffic in LA is always killer. My office is less than six miles away, but it almost always ends up being a 30 minute commute and a 15 minute parking search!
9:00 a.m. Begin Work
No two days of work are ever the same. Depending on the assignments given for the day, I either work individually or with the other interns in the office. There are a total of five of us, so our boss nicknamed us the #internsquad. We really bonded—spending 40 hours a week together inevitably leads to hundreds of inside jokes and friendships lasting beyond the summer.
1:30 p.m. Lunch Break!
Us interns eat lunch together everyday. Our favorite lunch spot is V Cafe on Melrose Ave! It’s a nice walk from the office and has the best sandwiches and fruit salad.Â
2:30 p.m. Back at the Office
After lunch, we always begin wrapping up our projects for the day. PR involves a lot of media outreach, which could mean talking to various broadcast stations, print/digital outlets, and even local radio stations! Sometimes media outlets are located in the East Coast (+3 hours) so it’s important to stay on top of things before 3:00 p.m.
5:55 p.m. (Almost) Time to Go
Within these last five minutes at work, us interns are always wrapping things up, sending last-minute emails and filling up the office-cooler with sodas/drinks for the next day (this is the most typical intern thing I’ve ever done).
6:00 p.m. End of the Day
Another day in the office done, with another 30 minute commute back home.
A summer internship is an incredible learning opportunity—mine really gave me the chance to experience firsthand an industry I studied in school. As Lauren Conrad once said, the key to a successful internship is treating the entire internship as one big extended job interview. A full-time offer is always looming for interns (especially for those who just graduated!).
