Look at What You Made Her Do: Taylor Swift’s New Song!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPRM chapter.

TAYLOR SWIFT IS BACK! A week ago, Taylor deleted everything from her social media accounts, intriguing fans and spectators alike. Many news articles speculated that this meant that new music was about to be released, and sure enough, they were right. Four days ago, Taylor began posting a three-part video collage on her social media, which put together showed a snake. Finally, the announcement that everyone was waiting for came out on August 23, when Taylor announced her new album, Reputation, the cover art, and her new single’s premiere date.

As a long-time Swiftie, I have been anxiously looking forward to 1989’s follow-up album. Taylor is an artist that has always used her personal life as inspiration to her songs, and since her last album, she has been in public beef with Katy Perry, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, and her ex, Calvin Harris. She has also been the target of hate from people, and has seen her Reputation (*wink wink*) change lately.

As soon as I saw the snake post on Instagram, I knew that she was going to come out guns a-blazing. When the Kim Kardashian West Snapchat debacle happened, people were using the snake emoji to insult her, and now she is taking control of her narrative—she is owning it and fighting back against the critics and the drama. The music is much more daring than before, swapping the bright, fun sounds from 1989 for a more edgy and confrontational sound. The music song feels like “Bad Blood” 2.0, but with more fire and a more defying attitude.

Here’s the lyric video.

Some stand-out lyrics of the song are:

1. But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time

Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time

2. You ask me for a place to sleep

Locked me out and threw a feast (what?)

3. And then the world moves on, but one thing’s for sure

Maybe I got mine, but you’ll all get yours

4. I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me

(And my personal favorite…)

5. “I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now.”

“Why?”

“Oh ’cause she’s dead!”

While “Look What You Made Me Do” is something different than the Taylor we’re used to, I’m definitely looking forward to this new era. The music video for “Look What You Made Me Do” will be released this Sunday during the VMA’s and by looking at the trailer, it’s going to SLAY! In the meanwhile we have this snippet making us even more desperate to watch the video. CAN IT BE SUNDAY ALREADY?

Reputation comes out on November 10, 2017 and judging by the first single, everybody who wronged Taylor during these years should watch out because, after all, there is nothing she does “Better than Revenge.”
