The movie script revolves around a central theme: family. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” brings a lot of complicated family relationships determining the action. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) finally founds his father, Ego (Kurt Russell), who is a demigod, and the film is built over the meeting of son and father. But, that is not the only relationship that the movie portrays. Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and her perplex relation with Nebula (Karen Gilla); Groot (Vin Diesel) being a son for the Guardians, and mostly for Drax (Dave Bautista); Yondu (Michael Rooker) revealing himself to be more sentimental than we thought we could be, caring about his step-son, Peter, and his “soul mate”, Rocket (Bradley Cooper).
One of the main positive aspects of the movie is the soundtrack. Following the first one, Peter’s tape – called “Awesome Mix Vol.2” – has a hand-picked playlist, giving a unique personality to the film. James Gunn (director) hit the bull’s eyes when he picked the second version of the space-opera, creating an internal relation between movie and songs. It was almost impossible to criticize the first-movie soundtrack, and the second version is as fun and dancing as the first one.
Not only is the music-selection spectacular on the movie, but the character-selection too, with a surprising casting complementing the old Guardians. The veterans team – Chris Pratt (Peter), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax) and the voices of Vin Diesel (Groot) and Bradley Cooper (Rocket) – returns more synchronized, with more emphasis on their emotions. But a lot of scenes are stolen by the new components, even Kurt Russel as Ego, surely one of the best acting on the movie, or Pom Klementieff (Mantis), with a lot good interactions between her character and Drax. Sylvester Stalone makes a surprising appearance, and Elizabeth Debicki shows up as a next marvel vilan, strong and determinate.
Beyond the selection, the character construction is another important aspect of the movie. Unlike the first one, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2” builds each character emotionally, giving emphasis to a dramatic-plot. The second movie is a good way to lash the third movie, that will probably focus more on action rather the emotion. Either way, James Gunn has already built the necessary connection between the characters and viewers.
It is interesting how James Gunn creates the second movie: it’s really similar to the first one, it has the same plot twist structure, but it’s not tiring. It has the perfect amount of jokes and easter eggs for fans. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2” is an amazing sequence for a story that will definitely entertain the whole family with Marvel’s greatest anti-heroes. The post-credits scenes leaves everyone dying to watch the next movie.
It is a good option for those who are looking for a whole package movie: great special effects, contagious soundtrack and a lot of humor. Probably, this will be the funniest movie of the year.
