Breaking the Silence: Suicide Awareness at Marquette
This semester, the students at Marquette University are starting conversation about a topic not many students want to bring up. The Marquette Wire has teamed up with Marquette Radio and other organizations on campus to break the silence. Until recently, suicide has not been brought up much in the media. The overall suicide rate has risen by 24% from 1999-2014. These rates were so dramatic that they lifted the nation’s suicide rate to 13 per 100,000 people and that is the highest since 1986. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 15 and 34. Marquette Wire has published stories from Marquette students who have personally dealt with suicide in their lives. The purpose of sharing these stories is to create conversation between students about college-age suicide. Being as it is more likely that someone will come to a friend before a trained professional, it is important to notice the warning signs and provide resources for someone to go to.
