Two University of Kentucky students have been arrested for trying to steal a statistics exam, The Lexington Herald-Leader reports. One of the students literally crawled through an air duct and dropped down from the ceiling in order to get into his professor’s office, according to The New York Times.
Around 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Henry Lynch II crawled through the duct and lowered himself the eight feet to the office’s floor. According to the Times, Lynch then opened the door to let in his accomplice, Troy Kiphuth.
Unfortunately for the pair, the professor for the class, John P. Cain, returned to his office and discovered his unlocked door had been blocked by something, preventing him from entering.
“He yelled out that he was calling the police and then the door swung open and two young men ran down the hallway,” University of Kentucky spokesman Jay Blanton told the Herald-Leader.
According to the Herald-Leader, Lynch eventually returned and confessed to the police—a lot more than expected. Lynch reportedly had tried to steal the exam earlier in the day but had failed. He also reportedly successfully stole a previous exam for the class from Cain’s office.
The university hasn’t yet taken action against the students, pending an investigation. Â
“Cheating and theft of this kind is very serious in an academic institution,” Blanton told the Times. “It’s an unusual set of circumstances.”
Unusual, indeed.
