During the month of April, the non-profit organization She’s the First launched the #withmybookbag campaign to bring worldwide attention to the lack of education present in many parts of the world because of poverty. She’s the First’s mission is to create the next generation of women in leadership through providing scholarships to girls in low-income countries. The girls who are receiving these scholarships face various obstacles such as poverty, increasing costs of schooling and dangerous routes to school. She’s the First strives to help girls overcome those challenges and get them to graduation.
Since their founding in 2009, She’s the First has provided scholarships to hundreds of girls and currently has 881 scholars that received aid and graduated because of She’s the First. These girls are from countries such as Ethiopia, Peru, India and Nepal. In addition to providing scholarships, She’s the First has Campus Chapters all over the world that help advocate for education equality. While there is not currently a chapter at Northwestern, the HerCampus Northwestern Staff decided to support the #withmybookbag campaign. Check out what we said about what we use our backpacks for and be sure to follow our Instagram (@hercampus_nu)!
