For those of you who missed out on this year’s Greek Sing, it was a pretty jaw-dropping show. Every Fraternity and Sorority on campus performed their hearts out and helped raise over $20,000 for St. Jude’s Children Hospital. As if that wasn’t amazing enough, they all totally killed it. Theta’s theme was The Evolution of Beyoncé and was definitely a standout performance. CeCe Dawson of Kappa Alpha Theta shares her experience at Greek Sing 2017. Also, make sure to check out the link below to their performance (which has over 5,000 views already) here!
What’s your role in Theta and what was your role in Greek sing 2017?
I was the Director of Greek Sing for Theta this year, and alongside me was Jenna Drury, the Director of Choreography. We led all rehearsals, developed the theme and all creative aspects… and everything in between.
What was the best part about being part of Greek sing?
In Theta, Greek Sing is this magical time where everybody gets to hang out with other members of the chapter for a million hours outside of our usual activities. We’re working 50% of the time, and the other half consists of us laughing/being slap-happy/bonding. It’s so great.
Did you hear about any other themes before the reveal?
In my opinion, one of the best parts about Greek Sing is not knowing anyone’s theme and being surprised while watching the shows– so I tried to avoid any “theme talk” because I wanted to be surprised!
How did you guys come up with the choreography?
Jenna Drury is the mastermind/genius behind our choreography, with help from Bailey Rose who has helped choreograph Theta’s Greek Sing for the past 4 years.
How much of a time commitment was it to prepare?
Being Director is definitely like a full time job… there were many late nights and some all-nighters pulled in order to meet deadlines and stay on top of everything… especially our video!
I know a lot of the audience -even other greeks – thought Theta was the clear winner. Were you as surprised by the results as the audience was?
From the beginning of rehearsals up until the moment before we walked on stage to kick off the night, Jenna & I were most passionate about creating a positive, fun and low-stress experience for our chapter. All I know is one thing: every single girl in our show was having the time of their life and that’s literally all I cared about! We put in so much work into our show, and regardless of our rank at the end, it absolutely paid off. Our chapter morale is at an all-time high & I couldn’t be more proud! I’m so happy for the organizations that took first and second because I know they put in the work too & I can imagine how proud they are of themselves– I would never wish to take that away from them. Oh, and did we mention that in total, greek life raised over $20,000 for St. Jude’s, the whole reason for Greek Sing in the first place?
Who came up with the lyrics and picked the songs? Was this a team effort?
Jenna and I chose our songs, then we had an amazing lyric committee dedicated to creating lyrics about each organization and how they helped us get to where we are as a chapter.
How did you feel watching the other fraternities and sororities’ routines?
Theta got to go first that evening, which was amazing because then we got to sit back, relax, and enjoy all of the other shows… which were INCREDIBLE. One second I was laughing my butt off and then next my jaw was on the floor in awe. I wish I could watch them all again.
Had most of the girls had dance experience before Greek sing?
We have some CRAZY talented dancers and they killed it. But one of the best parts about Greek Sing is that we got to take girls who have absolutely zero dance experience/performance experience and quite literally turn them into Beyonce. I couldn’t be more impressed with their diligence/work ethic/fierceness.
Any shoutouts?
Shoutout to our Greek Sing team who helped make this entire experience possible… y’all we had a blast!!! Jenna Drury, Ryann Dean, Hope Fenton, Mare Rote, Erin Thiele, Maddy Hayes, and our Greek Sing Mom/Diet Coke provider, Suz Byrd.
