In the last few years, Sacred Heart University has been rapidly expanding to fit the needs of the growing student body. It’s hard to believe that the Martire Center has only been around since 2015, or that “The Berg” opened less than a year ago. Within the next year, we can expect the openings of three brand new buildings on our campus.
Here’s everything you need to know about Sacred Heart’s latest expansion projects.
Pierre Toussiant Hall
Taking over the former “Jewish Home” property is the new residential hall for upperclassmen, Pierre Toussiant Hall. Toussiant Hall will offer “pod” style living; two dorms connected by a shared bathroom. Over 15 acres of land will surround Toussiant Hall on three sides, turning the property into what the school describes as a “residential village.”
Also on the property will be a brand new dinning hall (finally!), which has been designed to replicate the look of a 50’s style diner!
Much to the disappointment of rising juniors and seniors, Toussiant Hall will not be ready for move-in until October of the upcoming fall semester. Those brave enough to shack up in the Marriott for eight weeks will be the first to enjoy this brand new facility. Good things come to those who wait!
WSHU and Public Safety
Located on Park Avenue, across the street from Roncalli, this new building will serve as the home for WHSU Radio and SHU’s Public Safety Department.
For those unfamiliar with WSHU, it is a member station of National Public Radio (NPR), and is funded by Sacred Heart. The station delivers news and classical music programing to Fairfield county and southeast Connecticut. Currently located in the small cottage on the west side of campus, a new facility for the station is long overdue. The new building will include two full-sized studios, four editing suites, and on-air-equipped control rooms.
The new building will also supply Public Safety will brand new communications and surveillance technologies, as well a 24/7 emergency power backup to meet the needs of emergency response teams.
We can expect this building to be completed by the winter of 2017.
Hopefully a new staircase leading to “Ronc” is part of the budget too!
Center for Healthcare Education
Located on Park Avenue, just down the road from Park Ridge, the Center for Healthcare Education will provide brand new facilities for students pursuing healthcare-related majors. The three-story building will include an audiology suite, motion analysis and human performance labs, a driving simulator and pediatrics clinic.
The Center will also serve as the new home for the Life and Sport Analysis Clinic (LSAC), currently located in the Oakview building. Students can look forward to starting classes in the new Healthcare Center this fall!
With the addition of all these buildings to our campus, this is an exciting time to be a Pioneer!
