A Vegetarian’s Guide to Boston

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

Boston is home to savory restaurants, but as a vegetarian, dining options may seem limited. Here are a few options in the Boston area that will satisfy your needs as a vegetarian or vegan.

1. Veggie Galaxy – 450 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge

Veggie Galaxy Diner and Vegan Bakery is located in Central Square. The menu offered by Veggie Galaxy is filled with substitutes for dairy and meats. The diner offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For those vegans who crave an omelette, there are a variety of options including Prospect Street, an omelette that consists of smoked tofu, spinach, and swiss gruyere. A recommended plate offered by Veggie Galaxy for lunch is The Club Sandwich with grilled tempeh bacon, tofu, tomato, lettuce, onion, and topped with basil pesto and roasted garlic mayo. The Central Red Line stop will leave you five minutes away from the out-of-this-world diner.

2. FoMu – 481 Cambridge St., Allston; 617 Centre St., Jamaica Plain; 655 Tremont St., Boston

Vegans have sweet tooths too! Indulge in flavorful ice cream options served at FoMu. The ice cream is dairy-free and with organic ingredients such as coconut cream and cane sugar. The flavors include banana, cookies and cream, peanut butter, peppermint ship, salted, caramel, and many more. Not only do they make homemade ice cream but also ice cream cakes and sandwiches. FoMu has even branched out and now offers baked goods, coffee, and tea. All of the options offered are gluten-free, nut-free, and soy-free. The most convenient location is in Allston close to the Allston stop on the Green line B train. You can see our full review of FoMu here.

3. Grasshopper – 1 N Beacon St., Allston

For vegetarians who desire Chinese food, Grasshopper will satisfy your needs. Grasshopper has meat and seafood substitutes throughout their menu. Some delicious appetizers are Fresh Spring Rolls, Bean Cakes, Fried Vegetable Wonton, and Veggie Chicken Fingers. The specials consist of freshly cooked vegetables, such as the No Name and the Kale and Mushroom Delight. The restaurant is located in Union Square, off of the Allston stop on the B branch of the Green Line.

4. Dosa n’ Curry – 447 Somerville Ave, Somerville

Dosa n’ Curry is a vegetarian Indian restaurant located in Somerville, roughly one mile away from the Central Square stop off the Red Line. The specials include Poori Bhajji, which is deep-fried puffy bread with potato masala, as well as Channa Paneer Masala, chickpeas topped with fresh cheese, garlic, ginger, and creamy tomato sauce. Make sure to check out this ‘vegetarian fusion’ option.

5. Clover Restaurant – 27 School St., Boston; 6 Harvard St., Brookline; 5 Cambridge Center, Cambridge; multiple other locations

Clover is a chain of vegetarian restaurants located throughout Cambridge in Harvard and Central Square, Brookline, and Massachusetts Ave. The chain is based on the foundation of simplicity and freshness.
