Earth day is just a few weeks away on April 22nd, but why does it have to be just one day? Why can’t we celebrate our earth for more than just 24 short hours? Well, at FSU, we celebrate for a whole month! The FSU Community is showing its support for our beloved planet through the annual #FSUEarth Month! This month-long event runs from March 22nd to May 6th. #FSUEarth Month is a sustainability festival that holds different events to showcase what organizations on campus are doing for environmental and social change. There are so many opportunities to get involved and show your support. It’s a month filled with documentary showings, guest speakers, pop-up events and volunteering opportunities. #FSUEarth Month kicks off with ‘World Water Day’ and ends with ‘Chuck it for Charity.’
The month-long festival is already under way! World Water Day was an event that took place on March 22nd. The event was for students to learn about water conservation, water pollution and water quality through fun activities. There were games, prizes and of course, food! There was also an obstacle course to help students understand the importance of this issue. On March 23rd, #FSUEarth Month also organized a screening of ‘Delta Dawn.’ This short film highlights water equity, environmental justice and the relationship between Mexico and the United States. It’s not too late for you to get involved though! A few other events coming up include ‘Game Day Recycling,’ ‘Environmental Cinema’ and ‘Container Gardening.’
Game Day Recycling is an opportunity volunteers from Garnet and Gold Goes Green to rally tailgaters to make the effort to recycle their cans and bottles at the Spring football game. The goal is to make Doak Campbell Stadium a clean and eco-friendly place. Plus, volunteers get a free t-shirt and volunteer hours! This event will be held on April 8th at 1 pm for those interested! Environmental Cinema will feature the movie ‘DamNation’ which is a documentary about various dam removal projects and how America views them. The Student Life Cinema will be showing this film on April 9th at 7 pm. Container Gardening is an opportunity for FSU students to learn about reusing materials, like water bottles, for gardening and how students can grow their own vegetables and herbs. This DIY workshop will be hosted by Seminole Organic Garden at FSU, outside of Dirac and Strozier libraries on April 17th and 18th from 6 to 7:30 pm.
