There is never a point in the school year when everyone’s answer to “How are you?” isn’t “I’m so busy!” Every BC student is over-involved in campus activities and academics. We get so wrapped up in crossing things off our to do list that we begin to forget about everything else in our lives. Days can go by where I see my planner more than I see my roommate and that is completely unhealthy.
Being involved and studying hard are two of the most important things college students can do, but it is easy to forget it’s not the only thing they should be doing. In twenty years you’re not going to remember the poor grade on your bio midterm or the photocopies you made for a club event. It’s the long chats you have with your roommate, or the time when your best friend stayed up all night talking you through your breakup. A textbook will never be able to comfort you the way a friend can and your mental health should always be your top priority. If you are not keeping yourself healthy, both physically and mentally, then you will not be able to perform at your best.
If you find yourself falling asleep in every class, cancelling on plans with your friends or not having enough time to eat dinner, it’s time to take a step back. When you have so many places to be you’re constantly wishing you were two people, it’s time to reevaluate your commitments. As you begin to asses what things can be removed from your to do list, don’t let coffee with your best friend or watching a movie with your boyfriend go. Maintaining strong relationships will help you stay sane even in the most overwhelming times.
