Eminem once said, “You better lose yourself in the music, the moment /You own it, you better never let it go.” If you haven’t picked up these iconic lyrics to “Lose Yourself,” not to worry because you have your whole life to listen to an Eminem album. However, you don’t have your whole life to stay true to yourself.
Sometimes you may think you’re staying true to yourself when you really aren’t. It might seem like the decisions you make in life are in your own best interest, but that isn’t always the case. It’s as if what you’re doing is a mirage in your head hiding the fact that what you’re doing or how you’re acting isn’t you at all. Peer pressure is an ugly truth. Peer pressure disguises itself as something that others might think is best for you, but is it? No, usually it is not.
Yes, college is a time for experimentation and self-discovery, but don’t do it at the cost of your own happiness and well-being. This brings me to my next topic: the “being cool” factor.
I would hope that your days of trying to be cool are long gone, but hey, we’re all human, and it happens to the best of us. All anyone really wants is to be accepted. In order to be accepted, people may try out a different persona than who they really are. When you think about it, it takes a lot of work to actively try to be a different person. It is so much easier to just be yourself, and find a group that accepts and loves you the way you are.
Like my girl Miley Cyrus above who had to do some self-discovery herself, but eventually got tired of being perceived as this cookie-cutter Disney Channel star image, so she found the Miley within. Many people judged her for her actions, but did she care? No! She finally decided to take a stand for herself and show who she really was: a badass female artist.
Now, to all my peeps trying to find themselves out there, trust me,… I understand it’s a struggle. I know sometimes you might feel misunderstood, and you might think it’s easier to pretend to be something you’re not. However, I’m here to remind you that your true self is the epitome of your existence, so embrace it! Staying true to yourself will be the coolest trait about you.
