America: A Poem

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ship chapter.

This is the way America strangles itself.

She takes her flag and wraps it around her neck,

Ties it real tight – doesn’t let it go.

She sets it on fire until

Every last star has fallen.

This is the way America strangles itself.

She creates a divide she knows will cause riots,

Black vs. white; red vs. blue,

Then sits back to watch

The earth around her crumble.

This is the way America strangles itself.

She takes all he fallen souls who fought to keep us free,

Rests them on her chest until she can’t breath.

Until the weight of the guilt

Out weighs the weight of the bodies.

This is the way American strangles itself.

I am a sophomore in college and am majoring in Comm/Journ. I love writing, making art, playing the piano, and listening to music! I want to some day write for a magazine or newspaper. My ultimate goal is to work for "Rolling Stones" magazine!
