Early Friday afternoon, Paper Magazine release visuals for their ‘Break The Rules’ Issue, featuring none other than the self-proclaimed bad-gyal, Rihanna. The singer/songwriter’s feature in the issue marks ten years since her August 2007 debut appearance, after her third album ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ was released. At that point in her career, Rihanna had reached a turning point: ditching her good-girl, bubblegum image in favor of a much sexier appeal; which of course has worked in her favor.
Now, at age 29, Rihanna has dropped five more albums, releasing her eighth studio project ANTI last January. Not to mention that she’s part of the all-girl cast of Ocean’s Eight also starring Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway set to open in theaters next summer. Take that and throw in… a CFDA Fashion Icon of the Year award, MTV’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, a collaboration with Puma featuring two collections (the third releasing in Paris March 6th) and an acceptance of Harvard’s Humanitarian of the Year… it’s safe to say that Rihanna’s reign just won’t let up.
Paper Magazine’s #BreakTheRules cover takes its cues from Rihanna’s career and chameleon-like style. Giving high fashion bodega clerk realness, the visuals were taken at a local corner store in New York’s Alphabet City neighborhood. “We thought it would be interesting to put a superstar like Rih in such an everyday surrounding,” said Shannon Stokes, who styled alongside Farren Fucci. “When you get a chance to shoot @badgalriri in full @chanelofficial and @timberland boots in a bodega you take it!” Stokes said via Instagram.
The cover, which hits stands March 6th, truly shows Rihanna’s unique sense of style in rare form; only proving that she can do no wrong when it comes to switching up her style. For more photos from this shoot, click here.
