First, let’s get it out that Lady Gaga ROCKS. Yes, her SuperBowl half time performance was pretty epic but she has been rockin’ it for years now. Lady Gaga is the perfect example of “you do you” and being yourself. She is honest, transparent and obviously talented. I think we can all agree that her positivity and light shines bright whether you like her or not.
Immediately after her recent halftime performance, Gaga received a lot of backlash for it being “non-political,” when it was indeed very political. She also got backlack for her body. Can I just say that the first thing I exclaimed when she first came out of her costume, however, was “She looks sooooo good.” I definitely would not be mad about having her bod, but others seemed to disagree. Twitter was exploding with negative tweets slamming her “flabby belly.” Excuse me? I was shocked to see these tweets, especially about an artist who looks so good and is in amazing shape. Our society’s perception of body image is seriously skewed.
We live in a society where the ideal of beauty is tall and 100 pounds. Unless you are born into incredibly #blessed genetics like Kendall Jenner or Gigi Hadid, this is completely unrealistic. Yet, we all hold ourselves accountable for achieving this ideal. Females shame themselves when they aren’t skinny enough, because we see skinny as the epitome of beauty. Killing ourselves with cardio and living off of 1000 calories a day is simply not healthy or realistic. If we are eating a balanced diet and have an active lifestyle, then we are perfect just the way we are. Easier said than done, right?
There are so many females and males who struggle with eating disorders and body image, and it doesn’t help when people are slamming Lady Gaga when she looks AMAZING. I think we can all learn a lesson from Gaga’s presence in being comfortable with who we are and in our own skin no matter what society says. She constantly looks past herself and is a role model for people struggling just like you and me.
