New York Fashion Week Highlights

Calvin Klein gets political 

With fashion designers often staying neutral and escaping commentary on sensitive subjects such as politics, it has been a surprise this year to see many brands using their shows at New York Fashion Week as a political platform to voice their opinions and put a stylish middle finger up to Trump.

For his debut collection for Calvin Klein, Belgian born designer Raf Simons gave us a presentation of ‘unity and acceptance’ stating that the collection was for “different individuals- just like America itself”. Prior to the the show, the designer who has admirably stated: “When you have a voice, you should use it”, sent out patterned white bandanas, following suit from Tommy Hilfiger’s Californian show which saw Gigi Hadid strut her stuff with one tied around her wrist, to all his guests to promote the message of peace and cooperation. The bandana came with the attached note: “Unity, inclusion, hope and acceptance: Join us at Calvin Klein in wearing the white bandanna. #tiedtogether”.

Fuck your Wall 

Calvin Klein was not the only brand who took a political stand. Mexican immigrant designer Raul Solis, who put on a show for LRS Studio this year, sent his models down the runway sporting white underwear that read “fuck your wall”, “no ban, no wall” and “we are all human beings” in one of the most obvious and fantastic statements made this week.

Fashion stands with planned parenthood 

Yet another one of Trump’s policies has been attacked this week, with several influential members of the fashion community such as Diane Von Furstenberg and Anna Wintour proudly sporting badges on the FROW with the words: ‘Fashion stands for planned parenthood’ on them. The pins were designed by Conde Nast and have been sent to modelling agencies, designers, PR companies and the press who are attending this seasons Fashion Week. It’s great to see that the fashion sphere is finally taking a stand and getting political!

Breast cancer survivors rock the runway 

American designer Dana Donofree, who had a double mastectomy aged 27, put on a charity fashion show for CancerLand this year, to not only showcase her lingerie and intimates collection, but several brave women battling the disease with over half having metastatic, or advanced, breast cancer. The women of all shapes and body types took to the runway to proudly bare their surgery scars with model Chiaro D’Agostino inspiringly stating: “whether I have nipples or breasts or not, I am a woman”.

Everyone must remember “hot felon” Jeremy Meeks with his chiseled jaw line and piercing blue eyes. Now released from his stint in jail, for possession of a firearm and gang activity, he is forging a name for himself in the fashion world, making his debut for designer Phillipp Plien in front of the likes of Paris Hilton, Madonna and Kylie Jenner who were present on the FROW.
