It has been said on many social media networks that a true, loyal friend is not the one who bails you out of jail, but the one sitting in the cell next to yours, asking when you can do it again. Galentine’s Day, whether you observe it or not, is about celebrating that particular gal pal of yours, the one who shops with you, cries with you and laughs with you. We’d all like to think we have the perfect friendship, and here are 5 examples of on-screen female friendships we all wish we could model ourselves on.
5. Meredith Grey and Christina Yang, Grey’s Anatomy
These two whip-smart doctors are not only the best that they can be individually, but have also proven that they work brilliantly as a team, and their friendship has not broken throughout the many perils they have faced.
4. Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York , Miranda Hobbes and Samantha Jones; Sex and the City
The position on this list of these fashion-forward, pop-culture gal pals might be cause for concern for some, but that does not make them any less models for an ideal shopping trip or cocktails at the Plaza.
3. Ann Perkins and Leslie Knope, Parks and Recreation
The friendship between these two women can literally be summed up by the common expression “opposites attract”. One is an excitable, Pawnee-obsessed blonde, and the other is a calm and collected nurse. Throughout the series’ run, their friendship stayed firm, and Leslie’s simultaneous anger and sadness at Ann’s moving away is a clear demonstration of the strength of their friendship, one we should all strive to have with our own girlfriend.
2. Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, Gilmore Girls
In a season 2 episode, Lorelai describes her relationship with her daughter thusly: “Rory and I are friends first, mother and daughter second.” We’d certainly have to agree with that statement. Regardless of your feelings about the recent revival as a whole, it has always been clear that the most important relationship in the series is between these two headstrong but passionate women, and it is a relationship that we all wish we could have with our own mothers as well.
1. Monica Geller, Rachel Green and Phoebe Buffay, Friends
Of course these three would be at the top of the list. These three girls – while all facing their own individual (and realistic) problems throughout the series – always supported each other, proving that certain relationships really can withstand anything life throws at them. Really, who hasn’t modeled themselves on one of these three women at some point in their own lives?
There are (debatably) more important on-screen female friendships out there that have either have served as good examples or sometimes cautionary tales (Revenge, anyone?), but I find that the most important thing about Galentine’s Day is to celebrate all of your female friendships, whether good or bad.
