Quick College Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brenau chapter.

One of the hardest things to do in college is form or continue healthy habits we want for ourselves or once had. The most common cause of these habits, in my experience, has been time; we don’t have time to eat, sleep, or work out, and the continuous disregard for regular meals, rest, and exercise take a toll. And though it is hard to integrate these healthy habits with all we must do, there are 5 quick tips you can take to improve your day and health.

Tip 1: Water

This refreshing beverage has always been a favorite of mine, the reason as to why I was genuinely surprised when I met someone who did not enjoy it. Of all resources taken for granted, water is by far (in my opinion) the top of that list. Our bodies are, in large part, made of water and there is only so much time it can forgo being hydrated. One of the easiest things you can do is drink more water, especially first thing in the morning. Hydrating your body with water and dropping sugary drinks has many benefits, including increased muscle efficiency, better memory function, improved digestion, and stronger immune system.

Tip 2: Breathe

With classes, sports, and other college-related events consuming so much of our time, it’s hard to find any time to simply sit and relax. But I’m telling you that even if it’s only for five minutes, take the time to just breathe – without music, company, or even light if that keeps you from being distracted, give yourself complete and utter silence. Focus your thoughts on your breathing and only that for at least five minutes.

Tip 3: Talk

When I say talk, I mean talk to yourself. This is an easy step to incorporate because you can do it in front of the mirror while you ready yourself for the day ahead. One condition applies though – you must speak kindly to yourself. Very often the dialogue we hold in our head is filled with negativity and belittlement, which only serves to worsen the situation, our confidence, and our mood. As far as topics go, you can talk about a few things. If you choose to talk out your decisions, you can more easily gather your thoughts and decide what’s important to you. If you chose to compliment yourself, you will, of course, increase your confidence. You can even work to motivate yourself with positive words. Although it may feel ridiculous and you could raise eyebrows if people overhear you, this is a simple way to begin treating yourself with kindness and positivity.

Tip 4: Music

One of the biggest mistakes we make is listening to sad music when we are down. Though it is healthy to experience your feelings and not bottle them up, it reaches a certain point where you are only working on keeping yourself there rather than finding solace. Put on your upbeat songs or even make a playlist that will help you feel happy rather than sad.

Tip 5: Walk

Too often we opt for elevators to take us up or down. Instead, make the conscious choice of walking up or down the stairs. This will help you get in a bit of exercise and, at times, it helps to take a minute or two longer than usual. You can review a presentation in your head or even just relax and focus on your surroundings rather than the tasks left to tend to.
