In continuing with the celebrities who have made our campus what it is, this week is about Richard Shineman. For the past few years, Oswego has been working on a new building and it opened in 2013, which was named after Shineman.
Richard Shineman was born on May 21, 1924. He graduated with a degree in chemistry in 1946. After, he joing the U.S. Army. Shineman began his teaching career at Purdue, but was hired in 1962 to be the first chair of the chemistry department at SUNY Oswego. For the next 26 years, he was involved with creating new programs to help the students. A course he developed in the late 60s and early 70s is still being taught today. He retired in 1988.Â
Shineman passed away in 2010 at the age of 86. In his will, he left money to found the Richard S. Shineman Foundation. The purpose of the foundation is to make charitable gifts to better life in Upstate New York and Oswego County.
