8 Relaxing Hobbies for the Creative and Aesthetic Mind

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

Have you ever doodled on your notes during lectures? Have you ever chosen a restaurant based on the interior design and “pretty” factor of their food? Have you ever looked at an eyeshadow palatte and automatically know those colors just don’t go? Need an inexpensive hobby to commit to? You have come to the right place– here are 8 relaxing hobbies to remedy your boredom.

1. Hand Lettering

Often seen on Instagram and Pinterest, hand lettering is making its way to media as one of the most aesthetically pleasing hobbies. The best thing about taking up hand lettering is that it makes the simplest things more enjoyable. Getting bored of taking notes in class? Don’t worry, you can hand letter all your notes to make them beautifully eye-catching. It does not have to be drastic, just the topic of the lecture is enough. Trust me, it will make you want to try taking thorough notes to maintain your aesthetic. Hand lettering also comes in handy when birthdays roll around. With just a pen and a blank sheet of paper, you can turn any “happy birthday” into a masterpiece. Let your mind run wild and express yourself in the most complex or simple ways. You can find some helpful tutorials on Pinterest.

2. Designing Outfits

Whether it be putting together your own outfits, or drawing you very own, designing outfits can be one of the most fulfilling things to do. You can plan out your weekly outfits, or even coordinate certain themes for them for special days. The possibilities are endless! For any fashionista out there, this is definitely something to do on your free time.

3. Decorate your future home

This may be an unpopular opinion, but decorating your “dream home” can be so fun, especially when you don’t have a budget for dreaming. With endless possibilities, you can create your future home by sketching furniture and rooms. It can also be practical plans for remodeling your current apartment or dorm. Come up with a theme and look around your belongings to see if any of your things have a specific theme to follow. Remodeling your current room can be inexpensive if you really get creative.

4. Bullet journaling

This one is quite popular these days—bullet journaling. Bullet journaling is more prevalent on outlets like Tumblr, where members take very clean and organized notes of their day to day lives. If you are a practical person, then this is the hobby for you. Planning out your day on paper is so much more effective than any electronic device—especially if it looks nice. Not only is bullet journaling a method of record keeping, it can also become your master piece. It keeps you accountable for the things you planned to do and didn’t do, and it also makes you feel good about yourself at the end of the day. Keeping a journal like this can definitely be challenging at first, but it definitely is rewarding. I tell you this from personal experience.

5. Polymer clay

Polymer clay is basically play dough, but the adult version. Instead of just smashing your masterpiece, you can bake them and keep them. If you like all things miniature and you find yourself drooling over key chains and figurines, this is for you. Similar to play dough, you can create jewelry, figurines, and your very own keychains without having to buy them. Many people sell their creations online, on websites like Etsy. This hobby can be extremely rewarding.

6. Desk organizing/ stationary collecting

Since we are all in college, why not act like the good college students we are, right? This hobby recommendation might cock a few brows, but this really is a relaxing thing to do. Just think about it, if your desk is a huge mess, you are not going to want to study or do anything sitting at your desk. Clearing your desk also helps clear your mind, and there are many ways to do that aesthetically. Right now, the trending theme is minimalistic. Keeping it clean, keeping it neat, with a few accents here and there. Stationary collecting goes hand in hand with this office-themed aesthetic.

7. Food aesthetics

Who’s the foodie? Everyone. There’s no denying it. Nowadays, restaurants do not receive a younger demographic of customers if their food doesn’t look good, and I don’t mean the “yummy” good, I mean the “pretty” or “cute” good. Of course, another hobby is taking pictures of your food adventures and sharing it with the world. If you go out to many food places, you might want to think about opening your own Instagram account dedicated to just that. You will be surprised how many followers you get just based on the aesthetic of food.

8. Makeup

If you haven’t guessed it yet, makeup is also a creative hobby that only a rare few have the talent to do extremely well. But if you are a beginner (like me) you will be amazed by all of the make-up and beauty trends that are out there. Personally, I follow tons of beauty blogs yet I hardly know how to create a full face makeup without looking like a raccoon. I agree that this is very enjoyable if you learn how to do it, but it is debatable because of the price of the actual hobby. Though a little more on the pricey end, it is definitely a rewarding result.

And if for some reason you don’t think you can do it, trust me, you can. I know because I have done them all.
