How to: Survive Spring Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Welcome back to campus, Redbirds! I hope your winter break was a nice and relaxing month. Sadly, classes have started again, so it is back to the grade grind we all go. I don’t know about you, but my spring semester is going to be a load. Not only am I taking more classes, I am also working at the Visor Center! This is a lot of eggs in my basket. A lot of things to balance with not a lot of time. I needed something to help me manage my time and my grades. So, I did what any girl would do – PINTEREST! I searched, “student binder” and few results popped up. I chose the one I liked the best, which can be found here: http://justagirlandherblog.com/printable-student-binder/

What could make it better? IT IS FREE! Free downloads are music to my broke college kid ears. I hope you enjoy exploring and hopefully using this binder as much as I do!

Before we jump into the binder tour, here are a few of the items you’ll need to put together your student binder:

  • 3-Ring Binder
  • Dividers
  • Hole Punch
  • Printer/Paper/Ink

STUDENT BINDER

This binder comes with a binder cover already made, but I created my own to personalize the binder for me! Here is the link for the binder cover: http://justagirlandherblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Cover-Page.pdf

PLANNING

This first section of the binder is dedicated to planning, which is the best part! The first thing that is in this section is a calendar, which anyone can use! This one includes July 2016 to December 2017, and if you’re thinking even further ahead than that, there are included undated calendar pages so that you can create a calendar for any year you want!

Another printable that everyone could use is this 2-page weekly planner. Each day is broken down by hour to make it easy to use time blocking or just keep a close eye on your schedule. There is even room at the bottom to set some goals for the week and make notes.

Projects can be stressful, especially if they are in groups! This sheet is the perfect place to keep track of them, and all of their details!

SCHEDULES

There are so so so many things to keep track of schedule-wise when you’re in school, and the next section of the binder is devoted to just that.

First up, a class schedule! You can keep track of what class is happening when, where, and with whom with this printable.

The first day of classes are so overwhelming. I get my syllabi from each teacher and immediately am bombarded by assignments, quizzes, midterms, and test dates. The next two printables, an assignment schedule and an exam schedule, will help organize those things so you never miss a deadline. Don’t forget to put the location and time of your exams once they are posted to ReggieNet!!

TRACKING

The next section of the binder is to help tracking things – grades first!  This one is especially useful if you have professors that refuse to use ReggieNet. (I honestly don’t blame them, I have had so many problems with Reggie Net and I am only a freshman. Three more years! Woo-hoo!!) This printable will help you keep track of all grades along the way so you know exactly what to expect once you hit midterms and finals. There is a column to list each grade, and then one to keep a running total on the far right. Print one off for each class and get tracking! Make sure to bookmark/save if you need to reprint due to more assignments!

If you also like to read, there is a reading log tracker thrown in here as well! This can be useful if one of your classes makes read any books, you can use this to help keep track of how far you’ve gone and what is leftover!

GOALS

Goals are important right now, since the new year just happened! You can use this to write down your resolutions; goals for the week, month, or semester, and any other simple goals you wish to accomplish.

NOTES

You can use these to take notes, make a to do list, or just write down any thoughts that cross your mind!

If you’d like to download the entire binder in one document, you can do so here.
