Your Festival Guide for 2017

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Belmont chapter.

In comes the New Year, along with the exciting news of upcoming summer music festivals; so far, Coachella, the Hangout Festival, the Governors Ball, and the Bottlerock Festival have released their 2017 lineups. Each diverse and unique, all include artists who rocked 2016 (Lemonade, anyone?) and others who are looking to get out on the road with their new music dropping in the next several months.

Here’s what you need to know about the lineups:

Coachella  Located in: Indio, California Cost: Depends on how luxurious you want your experience to be. Tickets and amenities range from $399-$899, not including parking or a place to sleep.  Who’s Playing: Headliners are Radiohead, Beyonce, and Kendrick Lamar. Can you say legendary? This is the best set of leaders Coachella has had in *years*. Not to mention, the return of Lorde into the music scene after dropping her elusive new album. Father John Misty, Bon Iver, the xx, the Head and the Heart, Bastille are also playing stages. Even Hans Zimmer, the famous composer has found a place in the lineup– must be written in the stars.

Hangout Festival Located: Gulf Shores, Alabama Cost: $289 for General Admission and re-entry all weekend, $1,099 for a VIP pass, and $1,599 for a Super VIP pass. Who’s Playing: FRANK OCEAN IS PLAYING. Does anything else matter? I mean, besides Mumford & Sons, Twenty One Pilots, and Chance the Rapper. All four headliners are vastly different folks. Band of Horses, THATH, Weezer, Young the Giant, MGMT, Local Natives, Lukas Graham, and Mac DeMarco, and Joseph are also playing. COIN, a band rooted from Belmont, will also be alongside all of these incredible acts!

Governors Ball Located: New York City, New York Cost: $305 for General Admission for all three days, $650 for VIP, $2,150 for Platinum. Who’s Playing: Tool, Chance the Rapper, Phoenix, Childish Gambino, Lorde, Logic, Mark Ronson, Car Seat Headrest, Judah and the Lion, Wiz Khalifa, Cage the Elephant, Tove Lo, and many, many more. Tons of new material to be heard at this festival!   Bottlerock Located: Napa Valley, CA Cost: $349 for General Admission, $707 for VIP, $1,200 for VIP + Skydeck, and $3,500 for Platinum. Who’s Playing: Foo Fighters, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Maroon 5, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Modest Mouse, Band of Horses, The Roots, Gavin DeGraw, Judah and the Lion, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Andra Day, Silversun Pickups, Fitz and the Tantrums, House of Pain, Frightened Rabbit, and the Strumbellas are among the diverse artists on this ticket. This year’s festival will definitely be one to remember, because fans of all types will show up to support their favorite bands!

Whether or not you can afford to attend these events, there are often live streams that go up from the festival, and plenty of fan videos/photos posted to social media sites that others can view without having to pay the outrageous prices. Another fun involvement those staying at home can enjoy is reading the interviews that take place on the inside of the festival between music journalists and your favorite artists!
