Everyone expects to be friends with their best friend forever. You did everything together, from homecoming dress shopping to dealing with boys who broke your heart, but not all friendships last forever. So how do you get over a best friend breakup?

1. Don’t Dwell On the Past
Being stuck in the past will make it impossible to move on. Don’t focus on all of the bad things that happened while you were friends. Think about the good times and realize not everyone can be friends forever. Don’t bottle up your feelings, let them out but don’t let the anger or sadness consume you. Sometimes friends grow apart, sometimes you have a falling out, but holding a grudge is never the right way to handle it.
2. Realize Why the Friendship Didn’t Last
Some people are just toxic friends. They aren’t right for you and instead of making your life better they make it worse. Figure why your friendship didn’t work so in the future you know what type of people you should surround yourself with.
3. Take Time for Yourself
Losing a best friend can sometimes feel like losing a part of yourself. A best friend can be like a sister and mother wrapped up into one. Take some time to reflect on yourself and what you want from life and the type of people you want to be around you. You are who you surround yourself with.
4. Hang Out with The Friends You Have
Sometimes the best way to get over a falling out with a friend is to surround yourself with the friends you have now. Don’t let the loss of a friend—no matter how long you’ve been friends with them—keep you from having fun and living your life to the fullest. Having great times with the people you know can help fill the missing piece.
5. Make New Friends
Making new friends is the solution to everything. Having new people in your life can be refreshing. It keeps your life from getting stuck at a standstill. Join clubs and organizations or talk to someone you’ve never talked to in class. Find people who are interested in the same things as you. You never know, your future best friend could be sitting next to you in your English class.
