Find Your Passion and a Dream Career

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Western chapter.

I have realized that so many people are pursuing education, professional designations, and careers that they are not truly interested in or passionate about. If you are one of those people, let me tell you that will most likely not be happy if you continue this way in life, so now is the time to make the change.

We are about to have a very serious conversation which may change the course of your life. I will be asking you some introspective questions, and I want you to answer them honestly. So take out a notebook and a pen, and I’d like you to answer the questions below. After you answer these questions, your mind will be in a place where it is a little more open and you will hear your heart talking more than other people talking and telling you what to do. I want you to get to know you.

Question #1: What was dream career as a kid?

The reason for this question is because when you were a kid, you didn’t have all these fears and did not know too much. We were actually more in tune with ourselves and what our feelings were, as well as what made us happy versus what made us sad.

Question #2: When do you find yourself losing track of time?

What is that one thing you find yourself getting sad over if you have to stop doing it? This could be something that you find yourself at ease while doing, and not have to put much effort into doing. Or maybe you do need to put effort in doing it, but you don’t mind because you enjoy it so much.

Question #3: What would you never do again no matter how much you were paid?

This is an extremely important question because it will instantly rule out what you do not want to do as a career.

Question #4: Make a list of 3 people who are where you want to be or are doing things that you want to do.

This can be a role model. It doesn’t have to be a celebrity. It could simply be the lady down the street who runs a bakery and you want to be in her place one day.

Question #5: What is your message to the world?

If there was one thing that you wanted to share with every single person in the world, what would that be?

Hopefully, you have written all your answers down and have them in front of you. Now try to piece them together and figure out what kind of career, or what you could be doing right now, that could make yourself so happy, and at peace, that you could do it forever. You have to follow your heart because as confusing as everything may seem, it knows what it wants, and you have to let it speak, rather than listening to others and the society decide what you want.
