Useful ‘As Seen on TV’ Products Tested

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

We’ve all been there: sitting on the couch, completely caught up in your favorite TV show when a commercial comes on. Your initial reaction is mild annoyance until you see what’s in the commercial. It’s another one of those gimmicky products promising you the world if you make three payments of $19.99. We all expect these products to have the lowest quality, but some of these products must work, right? That’s why I decided to purchase three popular as seen on TV products from Target and CVS then put them to the test. After each review, I’ll give the product a rating out of five stars. Here we go!

Veggetti

What it is: The Veggetti is a kitchen instrument that cuts vegetables into various shapes and spirals. The product description says, “The Veggetti Spiral Vegetable Cutter turn veggies into healthy spaghetti! Perfect, delicious pasta without the carbs!”

What I thought: I purchased the Veggetti Pro for $21.00 and put it to work. I learned after my purchase that the Veggetti Pro could cut vegetables into potato chips, curly fries, etc. my purchase became more of a value than the original Veggetti. My initial reaction to the product was that it included a lot of pieces that were hard to put together. However, after nearly cutting myself on the sharp blade inserts, I managed to make delicious spaghetti squash and curly fries in a short period. I was impressed with how fast and easy the Veggetti worked. It came with a cookbook with recipes that are centered around the Veggetti. Overall, I think the assembly could be a little better and safer, but the Veggetti gets the job done much faster than by hand. I give it 4/5 stars.

Ped Egg

What it is: The Ped Egg is advertised as the revolutionary foot file that gives you the baby soft feet you can only get at a salon at home without the mess. The product sells for $10.00 at CVS. I figured for the affordable price I had nothing to lose.

What I thought: My first impression of the product was that it looked a little bit intimidating. The metal file looked painful despite its small size. Once I used it, I realized that the product is extremely gentle. I recommend using the Ped Egg after showering or soaking your feet (TMI alert) so that the dead skin shaves off easier. Everything involved with using the Ped Egg is easy, especially considering the price. It comes with two free emery pads as well, which is convenient. The size and shape of the Ped Egg fit my hand perfectly making it easy to use. I’m giving the Ped Egg 5/5 stars.

Miracle Bamboo Pillow

What it is: When shopping for as seen on TV products, I came across the Miracle Bamboo Pillow in the clearance section of Target for $20 marked down from $30. I purchased it on a whim because I needed a new pillow and it seemed interesting. Plus, my sleep quality decreased drastically when I moved from my comfortable queen size bed to a small, hard twin size mattress at school.

What I thought: The pillow feels like thick memory foam. It is advertised to stay cool, resist allergens, conform to my shape and keep my back and neck healthy. I kept track of my sleep quality for a week with the new pillow. I concluded that this pillow is for people who prefer firm pillows over fluffy ones. I needed to push down on the pillow for it to mold to my head, so it did not conform to my shape as advertised. I was sick when I purchased the pillow and did feel better by the end of the week, but I can’t conclude that it was because of my pillow. However, I did notice that the pillow was cooler than my other pillows. I saw a slight increase in sleep quality and my back hurt less than usual, but I didn’t notice anything special that an off-brand Target pillow couldn’t do. I won’t throw the pillow out, but I will not repurchase, especially not at full price. I give the Miracle Bamboo Pillow 3/5 stars.
