Whether you’re staying on campus or going home for Thanksgiving, these movies will cure any break boredom (because who even has time to study when there are so many great movies to watch). From holiday classics to Disney favorites, you’ll definitely find something good to watch in this list.
1. Shrek/Shrek 2
Even though the first Shrek movie came out in 2001 and the second came out in 2004 (how old do you feel now?), these movies are still as funny as they were the first time you watched them. Donkey is hilarious and sassy, and Puss is super cute. Who doesn’t love a bit of Shrek now and again?
2. Bridget Jones’s Diary
Definitely a classic. Funny yet relatable, Bridget Jones’s Diary is the perfect festive movie. With the third installment, Bridget Jones’s Baby having just come out, it’s a great time to rewatch them all. Plus, who doesn’t love cringing at all the embarrassing things she does? She’s no doubt our favourite ugly sweater-wearing girl.
3. The Notebook
The Notebook, another classic, is brilliant from start to finish. The characters, the script, the chemistry…Why not watch The Notebook and cry about how you’ll never find a love like Noah and Allie’s? Or how that rain scene is beautiful and you wish it was you kissing Ryan Gosling/Noah?
4. Harry Potter Franchise
When it comes to movies, Harry Potter has to be the best series. Every single detail in these films is perfect and in celebration of the new Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film out, why not have a Harry Potter marathon? Watching all eight films would take just under 20, so maybe only choose a few.
5. Mean Girls
No doubt everyone has watched this movie at least 100 times, and if you’ve never seen it, why not watch during Thankgiving break? It’s a funny social commentary on high school, and everything is so relatable and quotable. Plus, Aaron Samuels is super hot.
6. Transformers
Slightly different from the other movies on this list, Transformers is a classic in its own way. It’s witty, has great action sequences, the music is on point, and who doesn’t want to see a romance build between Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf?
7. 10 Things I Hate About You
I don’t doubt that everyone, some time or another, has had a crush on Heath Ledger. I mean, how could you not? He’s beautiful, and he makes this film amazing. As does the crude, witty parts, and it’s the perfect coming of age story. The scene where Heath Ledger is singing on the bleachers is definitely the best scene of the movie.
8. Hoodwinked
I’m not sure if everyone has heard of this film, but it had to make the list. It’s a play on the fairy-tale of Red Riding Hood, with a perfect balance of suspense and humour. Plus, the goat with the rocking chair ears that has been bewitched to yodel is definitely worth a mention.
9. Frozen
This movie is just the cutest. Olaf, Kristoff and Anna make a good team, and it’s finally a Disney movie that sends a message other than “you need a guy to save you.” It was the sisterly love that won in the end.
10. Freaky Friday
The movie is just as great as the plot sounds. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are the perfect duo to play a mother and daughter who have accidentally swapped bodies. Humor ensues as they try and get back into their own bodies. Plus, Chad Michael Murray plays a love interest (swoon).
11. Ace Ventura
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls are two of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Jim Carrey is amazing in this role – no one else is as funny and crazy as he is. With his facial expressions and humorous quips, these movies will have you in stitches.
12. Inside Out
Meet Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust. The five animated emotions in 11-year-old Riley’s head. Let’s not forget Bing Bong, Riley’s imaginary friend. It’s a cute, original movie with a great cast and great humour. Sadness is low-key so relatable, and she’s definitely all of us at one time or another. This movie may or may not have made me cry at least twice.
13. Pirates of the Caribbean
You can’t get a better, better-looking cast than the one from Pirates of the Caribbean. Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Kiera Knightley all have great chemistry with each other, and the first two movies are hilarious.
14. Mrs. Doubtfire
A brilliantly funny film starring the late Robin Williams. William’s character pretends to be a nanny in order to get closer to his children. It’s special and timeless tale that people of all ages can enjoy.
15. Home Alone
No doubt we’ve seen Home Alone hundreds of times, but every time it just gets better. It’s the perfect Christmas movie, so why not get in an early viewing at Thanksgiving. Let’s be honest, we all wish we were as cool as Kevin.
