As a freshman, I had high expectations going into Halloween weekend. I had no clue what to expect as it neared, though. Was it going to be as crazy as I envisioned? Would everyone be wearing costumes, and would they be unique? Would Freakfest be just a Drunkfest, or would it be a lot of fun? All my questions would soon be answered.
Expectation: Drunken people would stumble around everywhere.
Reality:Â This one was actually true! When I arrived at Freakfest at about 9 p.m., I could tell many people had been drinking for quite a while. It seemed like nearly everyone was having the time of her (or his) life. But at the same time, many could barely stay on their feet. People kept stumbling into me, and it drove me crazy. I also had some beer poured onto my head from the top of a building. Disgusting!
Â
Expectation:Â Your costume will be unique and no one else will have anything like it.
Reality: As I walked around State Street, I encountered many cats, referees, nurses, etc.—  basically every occupation imaginable. No matter how original you thought your costume was, it seemed that many other people had the same thought as you. Thankfully, there is always next year. However, there were many clever, unique costumes that referenced T.V. shows and movies. So there was definitely a good mix of costumes overall.
Â
Expectation:Â Everyone will get lit on Halloween.
Reality:Â I think this one speaks for itself. Mission accomplished.
Â
Expectation:Â The music at Freakfest would be really bad.
Reality: The music was much better than I had anticipated. I was at the main stage for about an hour or two. And although the music of Rich Robbins and Lucien Parker, who I had never heard of before, weren’t of my favorite kind, everyone was having a blast dancing and jamming along to them.

My first Freakfest and Halloween in Madison were not exactly what I was expecting, but definitely eventful and unique. But I know one thing; as soon as I figure out my one-of-a-kind costume, I’ll be ready for next Halloween!
