When my mother came up to UW La Crosse to visit me one weekend, I was recommended by a friend to try the Greengrass Cafe for breakfast. The Greengrass cafe is right behind Cartwright making it a quick walk which is definitely appealing to me and any typical college student who hates walking far during the colder months.

It’s a quaint, casual restaurant which features toys for children at the entrance and self seating. The menu features homestyle food choices making this a great choice for picky eaters and the people eating ranged from families with toddlers to college students to the elderly.

Right away my mother and I were greeted and our orders were taken- I chose the Traditional Benny with breakfast potatoes. I had never tried a Benny before but decided to order it based my mother’s positive opinion. For those of you like me who had never heard of a “Benny” before, it’s a breakfast sandwich on a biscuit typically with cheese, egg, ham, and a special salty sauce.

After about a twenty minute wait, we got our food and started eating. Now I had never eaten a Benny before but after trying Greengrass Cafe’s version of it- bennys are now my favorite breakfast food. The special sauce was so creamy and I savored each bite- devouring the food as quickly as I could vacuum it into my mouth.

As we finished our meal, the hostess nicely took our dirty plates off of the table and gave us the check. Being a broke college student- going out to eat is a luxury but the Greengrass cafe is a necessity. Their prices are reasonable- probably because they know they are located right behind a university.

So next time you’re thinking about going to Einsteins or Mondos in Cartwright, decide to walk an extra 20 feet to the Greengrass Cafe for a Traditional Benny- both of which I give a 10/10.

Besides being one of the shortest freshman at UW La Crosse, Marissa has passions for polka dotted umbrellas and pizza for breakfast.
