I spent the last weekend of October in one of the most beautiful places I’ve been: Greece. I flew into Athens with my boyfriend with one handbag, absolutely no travel plans– something I’ve never done before– and a guide book with the intention of having a relaxed fall vacation. Our objectives were to see the Acropolis and make it in one piece to Santorini.
Athens is really a cool and interesting city with a vibrant nightlife with many things to see and do. My favorite sights included the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum. We spent all day walking around seeing the ruins and learning about ancient Greek culture. The Acropolis Museum is incredible! They have thousands of original pieces found in the Acropolis and also really cool glass floors so you can see ancient ruins of Byzantine and Greek neighborhoods. I also highly recommend eating at the Museum to sample traditional Greek foods in a nice environment for 20 euros. One thing you must do when visiting Greece is try the local street food! The street gyros are 2.50 euros a piece and the most authentic and tasty food you’ll ever try without breaking the bank. Greek salads are a close second, at around six euros. The feta cheese and fresh greek olives are to die for.
Saturday morning, my boyfriend and I flew to Santorini from Athens. The view was incredible; the water is so clear and blue. Definitely an endless paradise. Santorini is an absolute oasis for relaxing and taking in beautiful views. Santorini is a volcanic island with an active caldera. The locals will tell you that the island is in a half moon shape due to a huge volcanic explosion in the 16th century. Due to the eruption, the beaches are uniquely colored with either red, black or white sand. The island is known for the traditional white square houses with blue accents, and there are as many churches as there are people and donkeys! It isn’t unusual to see donkeys carrying cargo and people down the rocky mountains and landscape of the island. We spent the majority of our time in Oia. The island’s main cities are Oia and Fira. Oia is at the northernmost end and gives beautiful views of the entire island. I highly recommend walking down to Ammondi Bay to try the freshest seafood and watch the beautiful sunset.
