If you’re anything like me, you wait until a week before Halloween, at the earliest, to find and put together a costume. Since most of us are broke college kids with a limited budget for things like this, I have put together some last-minute ideas that won’t take too much out of your wallet or your busy schedule.
-
Smarty-Pants: This costume is straightforward. Just wear regular clothes, buy a bag of the Smarties candy and tape them to your pants. Boom. Smarty-pants.
-
Quarterback: This is another cut-and-dry costume idea. Put on regular clothes and tape quarters to your back. How easy is that?!
-
Trash: This one requires a little effort. Just save some wrappers from any granola bars or snacks you eat, any empty water bottles or soda cans, etc. over the course of a week or so. Then, cut arm and leg holes in a trash bag and tape the wrappers all over the bag. Now you can throw the finished trash bag over clothes and you’ve got yourself a costume.
-
Alien: For this one, you’ll need a lot of foil and some of the colored hair spray or a wig if you want a bolder look. Just cover your body in foil and color your hair green or blue or whatever your heart desires. Add some antennas from a costume shop or maybe even the dollar store and you’re officially from another planet.
-
Watermelon: All this requires is a plain pink shirt; I suggest getting it several sizes too big if you plan on only wearing the shirt as a dress. Then, use a sharpie to draw seeds on the bottom of the shirt and wear bright green socks or pants if you can find some. Then you’re ready to partayyyy. (You can do this with other fruits too. See the photo for inspiration.)
-
Toddler: This one is not only easy, but cozy too. Just put on a pair of pajamas (the crazier or more colorful the better) and tie your hair into two ponytails on the side of your head. Buy a binkie for super cheap at Walmart and wear slippers or carry a teddy bear if you wish!
-
Grandma/Grandpa: This might take a little more effort, but if you’re really into the idea it would be fun! Go to your local thrift shop and find an interesting sweater or shirt that you could put over some baggy jeans or whatever you think looks “old”. Add a hat, glasses or both and maybe some gaudy jewelry. This one is purely your own preference and creativity but a great way to use your imagination.
-
Nerd: This one is also based totally on creativity, but if you can find a button up shirt and pull your pants up high, wear some glasses and a pocket protector with some pens, you’re good to go! Suspenders are a nice touch too, if you want to get fancy.
-
Thing 1 or Thing 2: For this one, you’ll only need a plain red top of some sort, whether it is a sweater or t-shirt and some colored hairspray or a blue wig. Just cut out a circle on paper and write “Thing 1” or “Thing 2” and pin in onto the sweater. Feel free to add a blue tutu for extra flair! Color your hair and you’re good to go.
-
Cat: Super basic, I know, but it is definitely a quick costume if you don’t have time! Just wear all black, paint on some whiskers and buy some cat ears and a tail, or make some, and you’re ready to rumble.
