Over the past two months, I have grown to miss many things from home: freshly cooked meals, showering without shoes on and my queen-sized bed, just to name a few. Most importantly, however, I have missed my mom. More than just a chauffeur to sports practices and someone to stock the fridge, my mom became one of my best friends over the course of my eighteen years at home. And I can say, there’s nothing like having your mom as your best friend. Here’s why:
1. She knows everything about you.
No matter how much time you spend with your friends at school, or how much time you spend apart from your mom, she’ll always be the one who knows you best. She knows when you’re on the verge of a mental breakdown, how you take your coffee and what shows you’re inevitably binge watching on Netflix.
2. Moms give the best advice.
As much as you might not want to consult your mom about your latest relationship crisis or friend drama, mothers do truly know best. They have years of experience under their belts, and always seem to be equipped with a witty saying or phrase to get you through any problem. Even better, they’re usually right.
3. She’ll always be there for you.
Friends sure do come and go, but moms always stay. No matter how many mistakes you make or how loud you scream at her, your mom will never leave your side. Your mom is truly your Day 1 – she’s been with you since birth as a shoulder to cry on, someone to confide in and perhaps most importantly, a shopping buddy.
4. Moms are hilarious.
As much as it pains me to admit it, there were some times growing up in which I’d rather have hung out with my mom and her friends than my own. Moms just know how to have a good time, whether it’s going on power walks together or having a G.N.O. for someone’s big 50th birthday. Once you get past thinking your mom is the most embarrassing being on the planet, you may discover that she’s actually loads of fun.
5. She would do anything for you.
I don’t know of any friends that would do as much for me as my mom would. From holding my hand when I get my blood drawn to watching Spongebob re-runs with me when I’m sick, my mom would do anything to make me happy. It’s that kind of unrelenting support that makes a perfect best friend – someone who would sacrifice so much of herself to lift another up.
So today, I challenge you to call your mom. Facetime her and tell her about your day. Send her a letter from school telling her you miss her. You never know, you might just make a new friend.
