5 Unique Ways To Do Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

As a college student, you might find yourself doing the same thing every year for Halloween: You throw together the most creative costume you can and then run around in the freezing cold from party to party. This year, try something a little different.

Murder Mystery Dinner Party

Throwing a murder mystery dinner party is actually super easy. All you have to do is hop online and look up a free murder mystery for you and your friends to play. The mystery will have characters for everyone to dress up as, so you don’t even have to deal with figuring out a costume. Just throw together dinner and drinks, and the game will do the rest. It’s a great way to get all your friends together for the festivities without the frostbite.

Painting Pumpkins

Carving pumpkins always sounds like a great idea until you realize all the work involved: cleaning the pumpkin, taking out the insides, finding a cute design, realizing there is no way you can actually execute that design and finally just carving a traditional pumpkin. So, painting pumpkins is a great alternative and you’ll get even cuter pumpkins as a result. You can even use nail polish or sharpies to create your design (which is way easier!)

Girls Night

Going out Friday, Saturday and Monday sounds like a great idea until you realize that you need different costumes for each night— it’s exhausting. Take a break or spend your Sunday night to relax between the usual Halloween draws to have a girls night. Just get a gallon of ready-made apple cider to warm up on the stove or in the microwave and have all your friends over to watch your favorite old Halloween specials. Or, if you’re brave, go for the horror movies. Either way, make sure to take a night to have a well-deserved break.

Picture Scavenger Hunt

For those of you who are looking for a more wholesome Halloween, create a picture scavenger hunt with your friends. First, make a list of 10 things to take pictures with around campus (i.e. the Alma Mater, someone dressed like Donald Trump, a dog in a costume, etc.). Then, split into teams with at least three people in each team. Have each team post the pictures from the list and post them on Snapchat or just have them save the pictures on their phone. The first group to finish the list wins. You can then end by sharing your favorite pumpkin flavored treats and comparing the photos from your hunt.

Creative Themed Party

With so many different nights to celebrate Halloween it’s tough to get creative with multiple customs. Instead, throw a themed party for your friends. Make it something simple that people don’t have to buy anything for their costume. You can even theme the drinks and treats to match your theme!
