5 Perks of Being a Commuter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UH chapter.

Many people only know the negative side of being a commuter at UH. Yes, the early morning commutes are hell, the traffic is horrendous and the parking is a disgrace—but there are some perks to being a commuter.

1. You can have a life outside of UH.

If you live on campus and leave school, you have to go back to your room at the end of the day. It can feel cabin fever-ish after a while, especially if you don’t have a car. When you live off campus, there are just so many more opportunities to meet new people and have other types of friends.

2. Um hello, free rent!

It may suck to live with your parents, but compared to paying over $1000 per month in rent it seems pretty awesome. One less bill to pay!

3. Free home cooked meals.

No waiting in that insane line for Chick-fil-A! Knowing us poor, college students, we all cannot afford to pay for fast food everyday. Our parents’ (or our own!) home cooked meals come in handy when we can’t afford these luxuries.

4. No late night or early morning dorm fire drills.

When you live at home the only fire drill you’ll have to worry about is if you have a cooking mishap. Early morning and late night fire drills suck when you are pulling all-nighters or trying to squeeze in those few extra hours of sleep.

5. If you can’t focus at home, there’s always the library on campus!

When you live in a house full of people, it can get a little rowdy. Going to the library gives you that perfect serenity you need to study. The library’s hours are extremely convenient for this type of situation.
