1. Meet new people
One of the main reasons I chose to join a sorority was to meet people. In my opinion itâs not very likely that you will find your âbest college friendsâ during orientation and welcome week. NYU is such a big school, and NYC is such a big city that it can feel hard to find people to truly connect with. Joining greek life makes it so much easier, especially if you are someone who is shy and looking for people with similar values.
2. You get to go to fun events
Mixers, Date Parties and classy formals. So many awesome social events to go to with fraternities and your sorority sisters. Additionally, there are tons of sisterhood events where you get to socialize with your sisters and sisters in other sororities (movie nights, yoga sessions, brunches, shopping events, holiday baking events-count me in!) And letâs not forget Greek Week in the Spring. Everybody loves Greek Week.
3. You get to wear Greek apparelÂ
I love wearing clothing to rep NYU, but it gets kind of boring sometimes. I mean, everything is purple and grey. The great thing about being in a sorority is that you will have an organization to represent. There are tons of online stores that make cute greek apparel. And if you join a sorority, you can start rocking some of that apparel and start a new clothing collection.
4. Networking opportunities (for internships, jobs and connections)
As mentioned earlier, joining a sorority gives you incredible networking opportunities. Not only will you be networking with people in your sorority, but you will also get a chance to network with fellow alumni who live nearby. Alumni can be extremely helpful in giving you a recommendation for an internship or job in the future.Â
5. Something to put on your resume
There are many ways to get involved and make your impact on the organization, which means tons of stuff to put on your resume! Everyone is always looking to beef up their resumes in college and joining a sorority is great way to do that in a lively setting!
6. You can always find people to hang out with
My sorority has a group chat where we can all text each other if we need advice on anything, want to form a study group, or if we just want to grab a cup of coffee with someone. We always have each other to lean on for even the smallest things. Â
7. Shared experiences
You will most likely be spending a lot of quality time with your sisters, and you will have amazing and unforgettable shared experiences that you’ll look back on once you graduate years later. Â
8. Find your home away from home
When most people go to college, they are looking for a second home, a place where they will be happy for the next four years. That was one thing I was looking forward to doing when I picked my college and settled in. At NYU, itâs particularly hard to find a home because itâs such a large school in a bustling city. But having a group of people that you know you get to see every week at Chapter Meetings and social events makes going back to school worth it because you know you always have a place where you truly belong.
9. Sisters for Life, Not Just in College
A lot of people tend to assume that sorority life âendsâ after college. But they are wrong. Sororities are for life. After college, you will still have the special bond between you and your college sisters as well as your sisters all over the country who were or are in the same sorority as you.Â
10. You give back to your community
Community service and giving back is always nice, but sometimes you may feel like you arenât making that big of an impact. The great thing about being in a sorority is that you actually see the tangible effects that you are making when you participate in fundraising events and other community service opportunities. To add, the Greek system is the largest network of volunteers in the US, donating over 10 million in service hours each year.
