According to National Geographic, the city was actually named a “top destination” for food travel this year. With that being said, it’s about time we shine some light on a few of Richmond’s best (college budget-friendly) Black-owned local restaurants.
Buffalo Wild Wings, move out of the way. Whether you like them southern fried or tossed in one of their signature sauces, Big Herm’s wings will have you coming back to N 2nd St. every Monday for the $5 special.
Comfort food meets fine dining. Located in Historic Shockoe Bottom, Loft Seventeen’s open and relaxing atmosphere is the perfect place for a first date.
3. Sweet Teas
Who doesn’t love southern cuisine? Family owned and operated, Sweet Teas will definitely satisfy that home-cooked meal craving we all begin to get around this time of the semester. You can find Chef Gary cooking it up in the heart of Shockoe Bottom.
4. Jus’ Fish
All they do is fish! Located on N 25th St., Jus’ Fish’s signature golden-brown lake trout fillets are served with seasoned fries and your choice of either potato salad or coleslaw. Show up with a friend on Friday or Saturday and get their delicious “Meals for Two” special!
5. Mama J’s
Richmond loves Mama J’s. If you’re looking for an authentic soul food experience, this is the place for you. Located in Historic Jackson Ward, Mama Js’ a la carte menu allows you to mix and match all of your favorite dishes.
