Now is the time to start freaking out because climate change is impacting our coffee supply… so it’s possible that you’ll be saying goodbye to your venti mocha latte with a double shot and the coveted fall treat: pumpkin spice lattes! What will become of fall?! Okay deep breaths and stay calm. Let’s take a look at the problem.
The Climate Institute of Austrailia, a non-profit organization, says that coffee producing regions are experiencing rising temperatures and rainfall patterns that are impacting coffee production in a very bad way. If emissions aren’t reduced drastically–like ASAP, coffee production could be cut by as much as 50% by 2050. For those of you who like exotic blends, you might never be able to taste another cup after 2080. Holy crap is right.
All of your favorite coffee shops know this, so for now and over the years, expect rising coffee prices (as if Starbucks wasn’t already pricey), shortages, and little variety when it comes to blends. But even worse, not only will you be losing a staple in your life, people around the globe will be losing their livelihoods. The Climate Institute says there are over 120 million people that count on the production of coffee to sustain their lives… aka put food on their tables and clothes on their backs. The Gaurdian also reports that altering irrigation techniques, terracing, changing coffee species, and other modifications could help, but ultimately won’t solve everything.
As if it wasn’t said enough before, turning a cheek on climate change is just not an option. Coffee is most likely just the tip of the iceberg and as time goes on, it’s highly likely we’ll get more warnings about losing our favorite foods and drinks. What will you do to help the Earth?
