Having good roommates is always a plus when you first move into college. Now that we are a month into school, you expect your roommates to be your best friends. But when that doesn’t happen, don’t stress. Here are some tips and tricks to give you a little push:
- Study together
By this point you hopefully know, or have an idea of your roommates’ classes. If you know you both have the same class, suggest a study session, bring out the snacks, get into your pajamas and hit the books! Once you both ace that test you’ve been stressing about you can start to make it a ritual. Just because it’s studying doesn’t mean it has to be boring!
 2. Go to dinner together
Going to dinner creates conversation, even if it’s awkward. Being busy is understandable, but getting to know the person you’re going to be living with for 10 months is important. Take dinner as a time to destress and vent about your day, sometimes complaining is the best way to bond.
3. Redecorate
A Home Makeover: Dorm Edition isn’t necessary, but talking about adding something new, like curtains or a new tapestry can help you get their insight and get a feel for what they like. Also, color coordinating is always an eye catcher for new comers.Â
4. Show interest and support
If your roommate is an athlete like mine is, you can show support and school spirit by going to one of their games or events. Showing interest and making an effort will surely get you some roomie points. If none of your roommates are athletes, see what clubs they’re in and maybe take an interest. Expanding your comfort zone may be tough, but not going alone can help ease the first time jitters.
5. Invite them out with friends
A day trip to New Haven or just a Sunday Target trip with friends can be intimidating for a quiet roommate. Having a friend (or a few) can help ease the awkwardness between you and your roommate and take some of the pressure off.
If you’re looking to get closer with your roommates, these tips are great starting points to begin a bond. If you and a roomie want to be featured on our Twitter, send us a picture to @hercampusqu!Â
