If you’re a first year at SMU, or a transfer student, this campus may seem like a weird dance of different letters. Why are all of those girls wearing the same shirt? Why aren’t any of the letters in English? What is that? Who are they? And how can I get involved? Well worry not, collegiettes. There are four different Greek Councils SMU’s on campus, and we are here to tell you about all of them.
Panhellenic Council
This council governs the eight Panhellenic sororities on campus. Panhellenic is all women, and ladies can join by participating in formal recruitment, which takes place on campus in January. Each sorority has their own philanthropic organization that they support. They also all have houses on campus, and with an average of over a hundred members per chapter, they each seek to create the best sisterhood that they can. The Panhellenic community strives for “harmony, loyalty, accountability, pride, integrity, compassion, innovation, scholarship, service, high standards, and respect,” according to the guidelines set by the national organization.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NHPC)
This organization was founded in 1930 at Howard University and is comprised of traditionally African American sororities and fraternities. They are sometimes called the “Divine Nine,” and the SMU campus has seven chapters. In order to be able to join, prospective students have to complete the Campus Clarity Program. The NHPC also has set recruitment periods.

Multicultural Greek Council (MGC)
This council is traditionally comprised of multicultural and multi-ethnic organizations, promoting diversity in Greek Life. They promote diversity and awareness, as well as strengthen cultural pride. It’s not just about the social aspect, although MGC does bring it, but also about celebrating cultural heritage.

Intrafraternity Council (IFC)
SMU has ten fraternities (all male), which are governed by the Interfraternity Council. They also have houses on campus, most on SMU Boulevard. They strive for the highest type of manhood and service, and add new members during recruitment in January as well.

So there you have it collegiettes! There are many ways to get involved on campus and to find your new family, no matter where you come from or where you are headed. You can also become involved in professional fraternities, value based, or academic ones. There’s organizations like Theta Tau, the engineering fraternity, or Sigma Phi Lambda (Phi Lamb) a Christian sorority. There are so many ways to get involved in SMU’s Greek life, so you are sure to find the place where you belong.
