5 Ways to Save Cash in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Dickinson chapter.

It’s no secret that college is expensive, and not just when it comes to paying your tuition. As a college student, there are a lot of pitfalls that can cause you to spend way more money than you need to. However, there are a few ways that you can minimize unnecessary spending and budget effectively.

1. Track your spending

Although it’s tempting to just avoid checking your bank account, it’s important to be aware of how much you are spending each month. If you realize that you are spending too much, try restricting yourself to a budget for things like snacks and clothing.

2. Avoid impulse purchases

Many college students (including myself) have a tendency to hit the “purchase” button without asking ourselves whether or not we actually need the item in question. It’s common to feel the urge to go on an online shopping spree when you are feeling a bit down; however, if you need to de-stress, try watching your favorite movie, taking a warm shower, or socializing with friends instead of resorting to material items to elevate your mood. Before making a purchase, always ask yourself if you’re about to buy something that you need, rather than something you just want.

3. Be on the lookout for deals, discounts and freebies

Many businesses offer discounts to college students. From movie theaters to restaurants, there are plenty of establishments that provide a discount with a valid student ID. Gift Card Granny has published an extensive list of places where you can save money simply by being a student. AMC Theaters, Apple and Spotify are some examples of business that offer student discounts. If a business isn’t listed on the site, it never hurts to ask if a student discount is available before you make a purchase. Even if you’re off campus for the summer, remember to take your ID with you just in case!

4. Shop smart for your textbooks

Don’t restrict yourself to only shopping in the bookstore. Websites such as Amazon and Chegg can offer more reasonable prices for books. Be sure to shop around and compare prices in order to find the best deal. Renting or purchasing used books are also smart ways to save.

5. Look for a job or work-study

At Dickinson, there are many places on campus that offer employment to students. If you are a first-year student, you are mostly limited to working for Dining Services, but all jobs on campus provide both a healthy pay and a flexible work environment. If you are looking for employment during the year, but you don’t want to work on campus, you can also see if any places in town are hiring.

Even though it can be overwhelming to finance the cost of a college education, there are some tips and tricks that anyone can use in order to cut costs. Finding ways to budget and save that work for you are key to maximizing your financial well-being as a student.
