Staying Committed in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

There are distractions everywhere in college and sticking to your goals can be quite challenging. Most times you may get off track—it’s important that you don’t forget why you set those goals and why they’re important to you.

Make a detailed plan for yourself.

A goal without a plan is useless. Give yourself a timeline and benchmarks to hit. Mark your calendar with these benchmarks.

Set realistic goals for yourself.

Know yourself and your capabilities. Don’t set goals that are too ambitious. For instance, trying to lose 20 pounds in a day—that is ridiculous. If you set goals that don’t match your abilities, you might get off track or upset.

Have a motivating mantra.

Mantras are powerful messages. Put one on your phone or by your bedside that helps motivate you and keep you focused on achieving your goals.

Understand your time commitment.

Understanding the level of commitment it takes to accomplish your goals will go a long way in helping you achieve them. Plan around your busy schedule and make time for the goals you wish to accomplish.

Set rewards and treat yourself.

Create rewards along the way that you can earn to help you stay focused on your goals. Rewards make achieving your goals exciting and could be anything: a sweet snack or a 15-minute break.

Track your progress.

Remember to always evaluate and track your progress. Sometimes your plan may need adjustments due to unanticipated experiences. Tracking your progress will help you understand what is and isn’t working, what you need to improve on, and what you are excelling in.
