5 Underrated Travel Destinations

In 2016, it’s fairly easy to hop onto a plane and travel anywhere, even on a budget. Sure, a vacation spent at a resort on a tropical beach sounds fun, but the world has so much more in store. Broadening your horizons will let you experience vibrant cultures while learning more about the global communities around us. Check out some of our favorite underrated travel destinations!

 

1. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is one of the most naturally blessed regions in South Africa. Known as the Mother City to locals, there is something new to discover at every corner. With a wide range of activities such as exploring the mountain views from above, wine tasting at the famous Cape Winelands, or kayaking through the sea to see emperor penguin colonies, you will never get bored!

2. Istanbul, Turkey

As one of the world’s oldest cities, Istanbul has a rich history of royal conquests. It is filled with beautiful mosques, museums and grand palaces that are considered architectural marvels today.  Istanbul is also home to the world’s largest covered market, known as Grand Bazaar, where you can find anything from Turkish tea to hand crafted lamps.

3. Salzburg, Austria

Known as the birthplace of Mozart, Salzburg is a quaint, ancient city with stunning panoramic views. Massive fortresses, aged cathedrals and majestic castles are scattered throughout the city since it was home to many great musicians and royal families. To take in Salzburg, you can easily spend your time walking on Getreidegasse, one of the oldest streets in the city or even attend an opera.

4. Chicago, Illinois

The Windy City is best known for its architecture, art scene and deep dish pizza. The John Hancock Center offers THE best all-around view of the city from a height of 100 stories. Immerse yourself in what the city has to offer by walking through the city’s Magnificent Mile district, enjoying Navy Pier or checking out the Bean.

 

5. Interlaken, Switzerland

Located between two lakes, Interlaken is a cozy town nestled in the Alps. If you enjoy winter sports, this is one place you should not miss. Visitors can take a trip to Jungfrau, which is a summit of the Alps dubbed “The Top of Europe”, or simply spend time exploring the small resort town.
