How to make your period suck less

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sewanee chapter.

Periods suck.

Let’s be honest, nobody enjoys getting their period. Here are some tips to take care of yourself and how to make your period suck less.

1. Take a hot bubble bath

It’s so soothing to lay down and relax in a hot bath. Make it fun by listening to some of your favorite songs. It’s a great way to unwind after a long stressful day.

2. Lighting a candle to relax

There are many calming effects of candlelight. Light a candle to de-stress and create a feeling of peace and calmness whenever and wherever you need it.

3. Do not eat greasy or sugary foods

Personally, I know it’s hard to resist because when I’m on my period, I just want to stuff my face with french fries and ice cream. But studies show that it’s a big no-no during that time of the month. Not only does it make you break out, it also leaves you feeling bloated and uncomfortable. If you need something sweet or salty, go for some fruits like watermelon and trail mix.

4. Stay active

Don’t just lay in bed all day and be lazy. Even though your motivation decreases, you need to take care of your body even if it’s the last thing you want to do. Research shows that 30 minutes of exercise helps relieve cramps, bloating, mood swings and other symptoms associated with PMS.

5. Use a heating pad

It’s literally a gift from heaven for intense cramping. Using something warm and placing it on the pained part of your body really helps relieve the pain. Who knew a simple pad could provide so much relief? I personally like using it while I watch my favorite shows.

6. Tampons

Tampons, girl. They make periods a lot easier and less messy. Monthly Gift is a femme care subscription service that can help you stay protected during that time of the month. It caters to each woman’s personal cycle and delivers a box of customized tampon, pads and liners before your period arrives.

7. Stay hydrated

Drinking lots of water will decrease bloating and makes cramps less painful. It can also makes you feel refreshed and put you in a better mood.

8. Avoid Caffeine

Us college students are so dependent on coffee, but it can actually worsen cramps and cause sleep difficulties and depressive moods. So try to decrease the caffeine intake while you’re on your period.

9. Feminine wash

Becase your vagina is sensitive, it requires a more gentle wash. Summer’s eve is a good choice because it is formulated to balance PH levels and help your down there stay fresh.

10. Vitamins

Your body loses key vitamins during your period. Taking vitamins can help you gain back what you lost during your cycle.
