On May 20, we will celebrate World Endangered Species Day. On this day we remember animal species with decreasing numbers who suffer imminent extinction. Many of these animals are hunted for sport, resources and are victims of increased industrialization. Their body parts, like elephants’ tusks and rhinos’ horns, are valuable and seen as more important than the animal’s life because of what they can be sold for. An elephant is killed just for it’s ivory tusks to become a bone folder or a statue. We don’t realize that we are wrecking havoc on amazing wild environments around the world, without which our knowledge on wildlife becomes more limited.
There are ways you can get involved on World Endangered Species Day or any other day; check out some of these options below. Her Campus SCAD is also encouraging readers to post a picture of their spirit animal or favorite animal on our Facebook page to promote World Endangered Species Day up until May 21. Also, please take a few minutes to check out some of the many endearing, endangered species below that must be cared for in order to be preserved.
