Fans around the world are mourning the loss of Prince, who died at age 57 on Thursday. Members of the music community are paying tribute to the legendary singer in a variety of ways: Jennifer Hudson and the cast of The Color Purple performed a chilling rendition of “Purple Rain,” while Spike Lee threw a last-minute block party dedicated to Prince with more than 1,000 people in attendance.
The cast of Hamilton took a different approach by having an onstage dance party to one of the music icon’s most memorable songs. Lin-Manuel Miranda started off by saying, “We lost a giant today,” before reading the intro to “Let’s Go Crazy”: “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life.”
Miranda and the cast proceeded to dance around the stage, and their energy was so contagious that people cheered and danced along in the audience. Overall, it was a joyful celebration of Prince’s life, and it kept the spirit of his music alive. As the rest of the intro goes, “In this life, things are much harder than in the after world / In this life, you’re on your own.”
