No doubt about it, we live in a society that encourages hard work and hustle. But the popularization of a strong work ethic has also brought attention to one of its rewards: the self-care day.Â
Self-care days are devoted to you and your mental health, and to making sure that you get a chance to relax between all the hustle and bustle of everyday life.Â
Read on for a few easy ways to have your best self-care day!
1. Put on a face mask! Whether it’s high-end, a $3 one from Walmart, or one you made yourself, take a few minutes to do something nice for your skin. Taking a hot shower beforehand will also open your pores, making the mask that much more effective.
2. Make a comfort box! A comfort box is a place to store all of your favorite, relaxing things, such as chocolates, your favorite movies, candles, tea, stress-relief coloring books, a glitter jar – anything that helps you calm down and relax after a stressful day. You can also decorate it! Search “comfort box” on Pinterest or Tumblr for some cute ideas.
3. Meditate! Meditation is an often overlooked way to improve your overall health (benefits include increased metabolism, a better night’s sleep, improved brain function, and increased attention span, to name a few). If you’re new to meditation, you can find guided meditations online or even download an app like “Stop, Breathe & Think.”
4. Make a list of things you love about yourself! Doing so not only makes you feel good now, but it gives you something to look at when you’re feeling upset or overwhelmed. You can even take it one step further and list five things that make you feel safe or comfortable (this might help if you suffer from anxiety).
5. Drink water! This may seem like a given, but running between classes, meetings, and work may shift focus from staying hydrated to schoolwork. Dehydration can cause thirst, irritability, and headaches – but it’s easily remedied. You can also follow this Twitter account, which reminds you to drink up every half hour.
6. Enjoy your day guilt-free! Being a college girl means you’re often balancing a full schedule, but taking a day for yourself is just as important as getting your assignments done. Enjoy your day off, collegiettes – you’ve earned it many times over.
