4 Things to Do around Helsinki on International Women’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

Would you like to celebrate March 8th in some special way but find yourself out of ideas? Fear not, Her Campus has got you covered. Here are four things to do to celebrate International Women’s Day in Helsinki!

1. Learn about feminism, equality and diversity

Celebrate Women’s Day at the International Culture Centre Caisa.

The mission of Culture Centre Caisa is to promote interaction between people from different cultures and countries in Helsinki. On March 8th, it’s time for multicultural women to shine! So let’s celebrate women from different walks of life and discuss the importance of equality, and why it’s justified to demand it. Free entrance.

When: 8.3.2016 at 13-22:00

Where: Caisan sali, Mikonkatu 17 C / Vuorikatu 14, Helsinki

2. Indulge in eye candy and… well, pick’n mix candy

Finnkino is showing a bunch of new, awesome movies by and about women. For those interested in romance, make sure to check out the magnificient Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara in Carol, a Thelma and Louise -esque romance that earned both women Golden Globe nominations. Then there’s Brooklyn, which, like Carol, takes place in the 1950s, and depicts a young Irish immigrant’s search for independence with the talented Saoirse Ronan in the lead. Motherhood is examined in two brand new movies: Room is a harrowing drama of a mother raising her son in captivity while Tiina Lymi’s first full-length feature, Äkkilähtö, a comedy, follows the journey of a scorned woman and a neglected girl. For all fans of Japan out there, Finnkino is offering Umimachi Diary, a movie about three sisters living under the same roof.

When: Week 9 onwards

3. Discover women’s stories from the past

There’s an interesting photo exhibition coming up in the Hotel and Restaurant Museum about the contribution of women in hotel and resturant services. The exhibition is an homage to the women who worked hard but struggled to gain respect, recognition and equal pay in a time quite different from ours; the early 1900s.

When: 8.3.2016 onwards. The museum is open between 11:00-18:00 from Tuesday to Thursday. The student ticket is 4 EUR.

Where: Hotelli- ja Ravintolamuseo, Kaapelitehdas, Tallberginkatu 1 G 60, 00180 Helsinki

4. Challenge the status quo and reclaim the night

Women’s Day is not all flowers and chocolates as there is a real struggle for equality behind the pretty façade. Join the demonstrators at Narinkkatori in a sorely relevant fight against misogyny, racism, transphobia and inequality. The event includes music and speeches, and it’s organized by Astra, Naisasialiitto Unioni, Tulva and FemF.

I'm an English major in the process of completing my MA. I love to write, either on my own or in collaboration with my husband and fellow Her Campus contributor, Toni Atanassov. Give me a topic, and I'll spin a story about it. In addition to writing, I enjoy horseback riding and boxing. When I grow up, I'm probably going to be an English teacher or a balloon artist.
