Is the Sophomore Slump Real?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

I am now in the second-semester of my sophomore year. By now, we are supposed to have a declared major or two and know what we are going to be doing this summer.

Sounds practical? Yeah, not really.

While this may work out for some, for others, it’s not as easy to know what they are interested in or what they would like to spend the summer doing. While freshmen seem to have open doors and numerous opportunities, our sophomore doors seem like they are closing rather quickly as junior year approaches.

Pressure, stress, workloads, and extracurricular activities all play various roles in our college life, and as a sophomore, our roles in college become more dependent. Rather than taking intro lecture classes, intermediate level classes have entered your course load. Freshman representative roles have now been passed on and now we have more responsibilities in various organizations.

The sophomore slump is not only focused on academics, but also focuses on relationships and personal issues. Friendships and relationships may change during this time, as they always do in life, but during our sophomore year these changes might hit us harder than they have before.

While sophomore year may seem difficult now, it really may not be as bad as it seems. While the sophomore slump may have only partially hit me, I think it is the uncertainty that life always hold. Learning to manage time and stress is critical during these changes in our life and there are many resources at Boston College to help. Check out The Office of Health Promotion and University Counseling Services for any assistance you might need throughout the rest of the semester!

While the sophomore slump is another term for a drastic change in your life, don’t let the term define your sophomore year. Sophomore year is another year in college, full of ups and downs, and while some may think you can avoid the “sophomore slump,” it is a part of life and the college experience. In addition, there are so many ways to ease the sophomore slump using some of our very own university’s resources!
